Rise early for a pre-sunrise start as you drive south to the ancient Abu Simbel temples, near Egypt’s southern border. Arriving early, you’ll experience the Nubian Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with far fewer crowds.
The site features two monumental sandstone temples built by Ramses II in the 1200s BCE. The larger temple, dedicated to the gods Amun, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah, boasts four colossal statues of Ramses II on its façade. The smaller temple, dedicated to the goddess Hathor, honors Ramses II’s favorite wife, Nefertari, with statues that embody her presence.
Set along the banks of Lake Nasser, these temples were saved from flooding during the construction of the Aswan High Dam through a remarkable relocation project. On the return drive to Aswan, the remainder of the day is free to explore the city at your own pace.

As you approach from the river, the temple’s soaring columns and well-preserved murals are a magnificent sight. Inside, you’ll find intricate carvings, including one of the earliest known depictions of medical and surgical instruments. Wander through the colonnades and admire the kingly propaganda engraved on the walls, gaining a tangible sense of Egypt’s glorious past.
